The expected selling price is $18,500.

THE REVOLUTION BEGINS

The new non-volatile Quantum-Optical RAM increases
the speed of the system, since there is no need
to refresh information after every cycle of reading
of information, unlike regular RAM.

The new AtomChip® Quantum® II processor with
256MB on-board memory has a high speed with
very lowconsumption of electrical energy.

This notebook has a wireless function, high CPU
speed and large memory capacity with extremely
low power consumption. Absence of the hard disk
increases system stability under low temperatures,
vibration and acceleration

WOW!!! When it becomes affordable I WANT ONE!!!

Atom? So when that thing BSODs... ... BOOM! ... ?
on Feb 10, 2006
Funny enough, the pic shows it running XP. You would think they would spend a little of that cash on getting Stardock to create a "state of art" theme for them?

Gonna put my pennies away for one...
on Feb 10, 2006
I don't think it''s real

I agree with Mr. XX. I went to the site and looked around, their awards are for things like New Computer 2006 or something like that. If they truly had technology that jumped THAT far ahead of everyone else their name would be ALL over the place. Also, they have a long listing of US patents, I went to the USPTO website and searched for 3 or 4 of them, no results. Therefore there are no existing patents with the patent numbers they claim to hold on their technologies or whatever. Not to mention the domain doesn't even look like it's registered to a company, and there are no contacts available at the supposed company.. I'd say this is about as fishy as it gets.

Oh, and let's not even start talking about the heat issues of trying to run a 6.8GHz processor in a laptop case!! Can anyone say portable hot plate!

pottable plate hot!

Well for someone thats fake they sure put on a good show, still not sure if it is or not:

Oh and here:
http://us.gizmodo.com/gadgets/ces/live-from-ces-quantum-disk-from-atom-chip-corp-147086.php

I have submitted it to Snopes and Urban legends for them to check into. I find it both ways, some saying its real, some saying its not, I will leave it up to those that investigate these things to tell me for sure.

on Feb 10, 2006
It's most likely it's not real, but since it's based on different techology, it may not get hot at all.
on Feb 10, 2006
Did a little googling:

Wow, this one really makes you scratch your head...

Just to list a few... Dunno, seems really cool but it's just all a little too hokie for me to buy off on it.

Anything with 'quantum' in the name sounds too corny, like a bad sci-fi movie. This probably has nothing to do with quantum mechanics, which makes it seem a bit less legitimate.

And what is up with the "Welcome to the World of Nanomicrons and Beyond!" A micron is a millionth of a meter, and nano is a billionth of a meter, so this is the world of a billionth of a millionth of a meter? And what could be beyond that? Working with quarks? I think not.

I also wonder about the 6.8GHz processor. The technology they claim to have is for RAM and other storage, not processors. Processors and memory are very different. And if they can fit 3.2GB of storage into a cubic millimeter, why can't they do better than 6.8GHz?

Yeah, this is definately fishy.
on Feb 10, 2006

Um.....

The Cray's are real....

And faster....

on Feb 10, 2006
Yeah, but they're not laptops. And they don't have a cool word like 'quantum' in their name.

Wonder how much a real supercomputer costs...
on Feb 11, 2006
They are real 'cause pc world (in australia) mentioned them in one of their magazines not too long ago.

Uh, no offense but there have been instances in the past of magazines and every other media on the planet getting caught up in something before they check the details.. I'm not saying that this is 100% fake, but the more looking around I did, the more likely it seemed that this is all a bunch of crap. Oh, and just because something is published in a magazine that doesn't make it real.
on Feb 11, 2006
Yes....I'd be listening to Kevin C on that one...
on Feb 13, 2006
oh
on Feb 14, 2006
They did show up at CES in January. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/11/atom_chip_at_ces/

They didn't let anyone touch the gear, though. Figures. No way to know, although most of the experts doubt their claims. *shrug* The AtomChip guys say they are going to have it verified by an independent testing group (no specifics). I doubt it, but I wouldn't say it's 100% impossible.
