KABUL , Afghanistan – Coalition forces conducted another successful
operation in the Kandahar region near the village of Azizi that resulted in the
unconfirmed deaths of more than 50 Taliban members. This was the second
such operation in this area within a week.
The purpose of this operation was to detain individuals suspected of
terrorist and anti-Afghanistan activities.
These individuals were active members of the Taliban network and have
conducted attacks against Coalition and Afghan forces as well as
civilians. Additionally, they have conducted attacks against Afghan
government officials and continue collecting materials used in improvised
explosive device construction and employment that often result in deaths and
injuries to numerous innocent citizens.
During the course of the operation, Coalition forces encountered organized
armed opposition. Taliban forces suffered a confirmed 20 killed in action
with an unconfirmed 60 more casualties.
Five Taliban have been detained and are being questioned regarding their
participation in terrorist activities.
Air strikes were used to destroy a large enemy weapons cache and several
Taliban compounds.
