This is my personal view and comments on the issues and events that I feel a need to talk about or express my view. You don't have to agree, but lets carry on a adult, discussion and maybe you will see it the right way, mine. ;)
I am stronger than the strongest enemy,
Published on June 28, 2006 By ShadowWar In US Domestic

My name is Old Glory and I do not understand all the fuss that many are making over me. You see I am a symbol of freedom that has stood the test of time. I flew over places far from home and also here at home on days like September 11th, 2001 on the pile of ruins that were once other American symbols.

I have been bled on and shot, torn and tattered. Used as a bandage and a rallying point during battles past and present. I have had the protection of millions in our armed forces and protected millions of other by what I represent. The world has come to know me as a symbol of not only freedom but power and sacrifice.

Many men and women have loved me, some have hated me, yet I have survived to be flown again and again. Some have burned me, cut me and stomped on me, only for me to rise again in another place and time to show I am still there and as strong as ever. I drape and keep warm and safe the coffins of our fine men and women of the military as they travel to their final resting places. I sit on mantles in some homes as a reminder of what is good and right and worth the ultimate sacrifice.

I even have my own holiday, flag day, which is a day just for me.

So as I wave above millions of places in my great country, and around the world, I wonder what all this fuss is over trying to protect me. I have been protected for over 230 years and needed no other protection since then and need no protection for the future. I stand for that very right that many find so offensive, the freedom to show your feelings to our government, which is part of what I stand for, and much more. I do not need the Government to place some law somewhere to protect me. I have the protection of freedom, love, and the American people who are willing to give it all for their country and for me. As long as one person still believes in my country, then I will always be flying somewhere, proud and strong. I AM the protection that many seek to place ON me. I do not need it, I am the strongest symbol in the world, and others seek and need my protection.

God Bless America and may I wave forever free and proud.

This choked me up, SW. Mind if I pass it on to friends and family? (will give credit, of course)

LW, You of are course free to send to who ever you wish. Everyone is. I wrote it to share, so share as you want. If you do decide to give credit, don't use ShadowWar though, use my real name, which I am not afraid for people to know,

Chris Wagoner, Former US Army, 3rd Infantry Division. And proud American.

Thanks for your nice comments too, I got choked up writing it too.

You should send this to Fox news or something.....it's very good..and makes a good point.

The main reason I don't like seeing the flag burned or whatever is because the flag is so personal. Not to everyone, obviously, but to me...when someone burns the flag..its like they are burning a little piece of me...they hate my country, they hate my government, they spit on it and they spit on me.

I don't know where I stand on flag burning legislation...but this article gave me something to mull over.

Thanks.

Excellent prose.  I agree that it should be shared and posted throughout the country.

I agree with you. I also don't like the flag to be burned and find it utterly disgusting and disgracful. BUT I also know that the flag is much more than just that piece of cloth that is being burned or disgraced. It is more than the idiot that is desicrating it is or ever will be, its more powerful than its physical presence. I love my country and I love its flag, and would love to punch out the scum that would deface it, but I also realize what makes that flag so great is our freedom that it affords us to express ourselves, even when it pisses other people off. SO I have to side on the freedom side, since that is the side that the flag stands for. If the flag hasn't needed it for the last 200+ years why do we need it now?

The thing is, most of the flag burnings I've seen or heard of were in protest of "flag protection" laws. We don't need laws telling us we can't burn the flag, we need Americans who are willing to either ignore or mock the coward burning the flag.

Nice work, SW. Especially since the 4th is this weekend, thanks for the help on renewing my pride and love of country.

Very good point. And I think you're right and so is ParaTed.

Besides I can think of a bunch of OTHER things I'd like to see legislated first!

The "bandage" illustration is a good example of why a flag desecration amendment would be a bad idea. Imagine a soldier, badly wounded, with nothing but a flag to bandage him to help stabilize him for transfer. Now imagine the medic being court martialed for violating the amendment.

It's all silliness if you ask me. Excellent piece.

Like I said elsewhere, your constitutional rights to burn the flag are no greater than my constitutional rights to call you a seditious anti-American weasel for doing so. ANd if you punch me in retaliation, well, then, we DO have something we can charge you with, now, don't we?

It's a moving article - God Blessyou.
You were in the same division as Audie Murphy - a proud tradition.

You made your point wonderfully. Nice job.

Yeah. I don't like it when people burn flags, but it's replaceable. But loss of freedom of speech is much harder to replace since there would be a precedent to remove even more rights.

Besides there's old glory being destroyed a thousand times a month. Technically, it would include any images of the flag too. It's part of life. To me, rights is MUCH more important than protection of easily replaced items.
