This is my personal view and comments on the issues and events that I feel a need to talk about or express my view. You don't have to agree, but lets carry on a adult, discussion and maybe you will see it the right way, mine. ;)

Since you will not see this in the news, I'll post it here.

July 13, 2007 - Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 19 suspects during combat operations in central and western Iraq today.

Forces targeted al Qaeda in Iraq leaders during raids on several buildings in Tarmiyah. During the raids, coalition forces detained six suspects, including an alleged weapons facilitator in Anbar province with close ties to al-Qaeda senior leaders.

A separate raid in Tarmiyah netted two more suspects tied to the religious emir of al Qaeda in Iraq.

West of Taji, forces captured eight suspects, including one allegedly involved in coordinating suicide operations and importing weapons.

Forces raided two buildings in southwestern Baghdad and detained three more suspects.

In other Iraq operations today, coalition forces captured a high-ranking "special groups" cell leader during a pre-dawn raid in Baghdad. He is suspected of coordinating logistical support from Iran and is believed to have directed attacks against coalition forces.

In other Iraq operations this week:

--Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers, with Iraqi security force counterparts, killed nine insurgents and detained 13 more in a fire fight yesterday in the New Baghdad district of eastern Baghdad.

--Multinational Division Baghdad attack helicopter crews destroyed a homemade explosive factory and cache yesterday northwest of Baghdad.

Forces found materials used to make improvised explosive devices including an acetylene tank, fertilizer, sugar and an industrial-grade sifter. Coalition forces detained 18 suspects.

--Coalition forces continue the hunt for insurgents responsible for firing 11 indirect fire rounds into Baghdad civilian neighborhoods July 11. Eleven 120 mm mortar rounds impacted in the Amil and Baladiat areas of eastern Baghdad. In the past week, insurgent-delivered indirect fire attacks targeted areas in the New Baghdad and Rashid security districts.

The operation, launched by the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team "Dragons," 1st Infantry Division, targeted suspected terrorists by interdicting their supply chains.

You could kill 50,000 of them and capture 1,000,000 tons of munitions and related material, and it would not make a jot of difference. It is this central facit of the conflict that has gone over the heads of the "vapourise the bad guy - problem solved" Brigade. All we can do in the Military is provide a breathing space for Political solutions, that is the Core nature of thew role of the military in Conflicts, it cannot and will never be a solution in itself. When you fight an ideology, a belief , a deeply routed ideology - no matter how depraved or otherwise it may be - you will never - never - defeat it by force of arms alone.

I like many others who have served in Iraq and seen their friends blown to pieces, know that more than most - certainly it seems more than the politicians on Capitol Hill, many of whom are using the conflict as a local political toy with scant real feeling or regard for the consequencies for their armed forces.

These kinds of conflicts take generations to resolve, you dont change ideological belief overnight, History has shown that time & Time again. However ambitious Politicians with selfish agendas either dont know that, ignore it, or blatently abuse that fact for their own ends. We now are hearing of a "Vertical Surge" - political speak for "bomb the £$%$£ out of them". Classic Amrican political response to something they dont understand, and care little about. That results from the very insular nature of the US which by tradition has been very isolationist. Its only relatively recently, in the last 80 years or so that it has taken any notice of events outside its borders - it still has much to learn on the dynamics of international conflict and internal drivers of co-existing faiths and walks of life.

The US has yet to learn its own history lesson - the events preceding its own War of Independence, and during it, were harsh times, and much "punishment" was wielded out by Colonial Powers - the only effect that "punishment" or "solution" had was to stiffen resolve, and make the revolutionaries even more determined to rid themselves of what they saw as "the evil".

Has the US become so arrogant as to believe it does not equally apply to other areas of the world, other interests and beliefs?

So publish whatever military success has been accomplished, of course, the guys do a good job, and deserve the recognition for it.

They also deserve to be better served by their Political masters on the Hill (note I did not say The White House), who need to get their heads out of their selfish local political mire, and understand the nature of Conflict, the potential solutions, and the realisation that these ideological conflicts take generations to resolve, not months between Primarys or weeks of simplistic carpet bombing.
