OK I have a new one for you other geeks.

I have a computer I am trying to fix, without haveing to reload and reformat. The "my Computer" hard drives and such have disappeared from Windows Explorer. I have never seen anything like it. You open Windows Explorer and you see no "my computer" and no drives. Only My documents and desktop. So I have gone into the folders settings and everything is checked that should be. Has Anyone out there seen this before? Anyone want to take it on and tell me how to get those items back fo this poor guy??

Hmmm...that is an odd one.  You can't find it anywhere (not even in the start menu)?

Have you tried reinstalling the OS?  (Don't reformat, just reinstall over your current install)

What OS do you use and what are your access rights on the PC? If you are on Win XP it might be a case of locked or hidden drives by the PC's administrator or power user. If someone has gained access through network as a Network Administrotor could also do this. If that is the case you'd better check out all the administrator tools and utilities about access rights and priviledges. Also check whether someone or something has access to your PC over network, with proggies like Norton Internet Security,or Ad-Aware,Spy-Ware Doctor and stuff. Also i recomend that you put on something like Symantec Go-Back,so that you fix all the errors of the present...well most of them. Also follow the advice by Karma Girl,it could work. Besides these well it's one of the most weird cases i've ever seen.

Can that be done as an administrator override? At my work there are drives I can't see or access on the computers there because I haven't been given access. Is it something like that?

not weird at all..... .. programs like tweak ui and Advanced System optimizer (to name two of many) give the user the option to hide drives as well as any folders and or icons from view ..i would recommend if you can, to see if theres a tool like that in the start up menu ..if there is run it and look for a system security settings tab or section ..there may be a "hide drives" setting in there as well as "hide folders" one ...
