Far reaching consequences for CJ world
Several studies as well as casework confirmed the possibility to get a good DNA-profile from a single processed latent fingerprint. However, some fingerprint powders interfere with the DNA-analysis.
It has been shown by some Criminal Forensic Labs in Brusselsand elsewhere that they were able to take a single latent lifted fingerprint and recover usable DNA from it. It stands to reason that when you leave behind a finger print you are touching something and therefore some skin cells (epethilial) rub off and are left in the fingerprint. The prints were recovered by various means including super glue fuming and dusting and they were still able to get a DNA Profile.
This new area of Forensic investigation could have far reaching impact on older cases where no DNA was thought to exsist yet they had fingerprints of a suspect. Also even if the suspect wears gloves, should the gloves be found or left at the scene, DNA from inside the gloves can be recovered. Just another example that crime does not pay.
I will follow this subkect and get more to you when it comes out.
