U.S. Soldiers foil 7 bomb attacks, nab 8 suspects
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A group of Iraqi citizens helped Task Force Baghdad Soldiers working in northwest Baghdad find two roadside bombs before terrorists could use them Aug. 10. The civilians approached a U.S. patrol at 9:15 a.m. to tell the Soldiers that the bombs were placed near a major highway in the area.
When the patrol investigated the site, they found two land mines and two mortar rounds wrapped in detonation cord. The Soldiers secured the site to keep people away, and called in an explosive ordnance disposal team to safely detonate the munitions.
Four hours later, another Task Force Baghdad unit patrolling in west Baghdad was attacked by a suicide car bomber. The car bomb detonated prematurely, 10 feet from the Soldiers' vehicles. The driver of the car bomb was killed in the failed attack, but no one else was injured.
The Soldiers were also able to stop a suspicious vehicle following directly behind the car bomb. When the unit searched the vehicle and the two occupants inside, they found a loaded AK-47 rifle. One of the occupants also had a cellular phone which could have been used to communicate with the suicide bomber or videotape the attack. Both men where taken into custody for questioning.
At 4:45 p.m., a third Task Force Baghdad unit found two 100-pound bombs hidden under some grass laid on a major highway in northwest Baghdad. The Soldiers secured the site and called in an EOD team to dispose of the bomb.
They also noticed a group of people gathered around a car about 100 yards away from the bomb. The Soldiers questioned the crowd to find out who the vehicle belonged to. When the owner was identified, the Soldiers searched the vehicle and, in the trunk, they found the same kind of grass used to cover the bombs. They also found explosive materials in the car. The vehicle's owner and three other men were taken into custody for questioning.
Over the remainder of the day, Task Force Baghdad Soldiers found and safely disabled three more roadside bombs in northwest, central and south Baghdad.
