Weapons cache destroyed in Al Anbar

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Multi-national ground forces, acting on an Iraqi tip, discovered and destroyed a large cache of artillery shells in the early hours of Aug. 16.

The shells were apparently intended for use as improvised explosive devices.

An explosive ordinance disposal technician advised that the 25 to 30 individual 152mm rounds located inside a building within Al Anbar province be destroyed.

Security forces confirmed there were no friendly or enemy personnel in the building. Security forces destroyed the building and its contents with an air strike after ensuring all non-combatants were clear of the area.

Secondary explosions were observed.

No civilians were harmed during the operation, which took place in its entirety before daybreak. One terrorist was killed during the initial stages of the operation.

For those of you that do not know what a 155mm round looks like or how big it is, here is a picture of the artillery piece that shoots them, the round is laying on e ground in the bottom right of the photo. These are large munitions and make up a big part of the IED's found by and used against our troops. This is a good haul!!
