and need to be reminded?

Jan. 18, 2006 The American people must remind themselves every day that the United States is at war, a top Army general said today.

Army Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, speaking at the American Enterprise Institute here, said that 21st century warfare is more about "will and perception, than taking territory or enemies killed."

The will of the American people and people around the world to confront the terrorists and defeat them is the center of gravity in what Pentagon officials are calling "the long war," Odierno, assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said.

The enemy realizes this, he said. "Ultimately, they believe they will be more patient than Western states and they will, over time, win out," he said.

Information is just as critical as firepower in the long war, Odierno said, and this, too, the enemy understands.

The enemy in the long war is not a traditional foe. Terror networks are "violent, elusive, global in nature and loosely connected," Odierno said. The only tie is the tie of ideology, and that ideology is to make a "caliphate" -- a land in which political, social and religious aspects of life are solidified and led by a single supreme ruler.

"The (terrorist) propaganda on the Internet is clear, they want to re-establish the caliphate," Odierno said. "The center of the caliphate was initially going to be Afghanistan and was supported by the Taliban. Once the Taliban was defeated and overthrown, they shifted. And now in all their writings they say the center of the caliphate will be in the 'Land of Two Rivers' -- Iraq."

Their goal is to start in Iraq, expand the caliphate throughout the Middle East and then ultimately across the entire world, Odierno said. "Will they do this? No," he said. "But that's their intent."

Americans need to talk about these terror goals, he said. Americans need to understand the way the terrorists think and understand the threat they pose, because this may help Americans foster the will to combat these groups, he said.

Hello!!! I agree that most Americans have forgotten just what we are doing. Wake up America, or you may wake up one morning and see you family blown up by a car bomb from some Terrorist. I think I heard it from someone, "Take the fight to the enemy." or another of my favorites: "If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles." Sun Tzu

And of course there is the Great General George S. Patton Jr. : "War is an art and as such is not susceptible of explanation by fixed formula" and "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." and last but not least, "Moral courage is the most valuable and usually the most absent characteristic in men."
We should listen to these men who were there in war and won.

Yes, if Americans didn't directly loose someone on 9/11 holding on to imaginary emotions associated with the losses of others fades quickly to me, me and more me....

That top general knows his Americans better then they know themselves. We've taken the lead in fighting a shadow war inside many borders around the world. The good part is that war doesn't come into the American home except via 2D news feed. The bad part is unless average JU gets socked in the jaw by 3D TV, he's numb except for his momentary idealistic constipation.

War, what war... you're making that up.... ignore them, they will go away. Turn the cheek, say your sorry, give them money, tell them yes to anything they ask for. They will be nice as are all humans and eventually go home to live a nice loving life. Oh, and by the way, I got more important things to worry about, leave me alone.

Just as the bacteria is willing to use our own Constitutional Rights as a weapon against us, they will (and are) use our own complacency against us. If only our government could present war as a part of the CSI or Law & Order franchises, then there would be more support than the pentagon could handle. Unfortunately, war is more serious than that, and that flies in the face of our little comfort zones a bit too dearly.

That's the ticket. A TV show named "Law & Order, DT&M" ---- Dysfunctional Terriorism and the Muslim"

I love Tom Clancy novels, but the last one they made into a movie, they really bastardized.  The book had some muslim fanatics nuking the super bowl.  But the stupid producers were afraid of stygmatizing Muslims, so they made it a new nazi!  It really destroyed the movie (Ben Affleck did not help either).  The problem with a show is that the loony liberals of hollywood would bastardize it, much like they did with Mash in the latter years.

That movie sucked!! Especially at the end when, just days after a nuclear terrorist attack in Baltimore, everyone in Washington was picnicing in the park... as if nothing happened.

I like TV show 24's approach much better, Jack just breaks fingers, shoots without hesitation, and blows up the terrorist using their own detonators! Hooooah

Right on brother.

Ah yes, an interesting movie. Could have been better if Ben was not part of it, heck even Dare Devil might have been better without him, and Gigli was a disaster. And now Butch Casedy and the Sundance Kid? Give me a break, the only thing that man has ever done good is bang JLo.

Agreed.

Yes, I recall that pathetic attempt. I love TC novels also, not only due to his style, but his patriotic diligent research with various government agencies to insure authenticity . Plus he's well connected with some Langley boys.

They are redoing the Robert Redford and Paul Newman film? God that sucks!  Especially with Bennifer!
