Can't be, I was told by the media its just not so...

Jan. 20, 2006  Iraqi Sunnis who may have partnered with foreign terrorist groups in the past will abandon that practice because it's against their interests, the U.S. officer in charge of operations in northern Iraq predicted today.

"I think we'll probably see fewer and fewer Sunni organizations aligned with terrorists and foreign fighters," Army Maj. Gen. Thomas R. Turner II, the commander of Multinational Division North, said to Pentagon reporters during a news conference via satellite. "The Iraqi people fully realize that the goals of al Qaeda are not compatible with the Iraq of the future that they envision," Turner said.

Turner, who's also the commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) from Fort Campbell, Ky., said his command's 23,000 U.S. servicemembers and 105,000 Iraqi soldiers and police patrol an area the size of Pennsylvania. The command's area includes the cities of Balad, Kirkuk, Tikrit, Mosul and Samarra. Turner said his mission is to find and defeat terrorists and promote stability while preparing Iraqi security forces to assume more responsibility.

He noted the combined forces still see organized al Qaeda elements, but have been successful in killing terrorist leaders. The replacement al Qaeda leaders are markedly less experienced and effective than their predecessors, he said. "It's getting easier and easier to find and capture or kill them," the general said.

He also said Iraqi security forces are increasingly taking the lead in operations. The command is now working to improve the capabilities of Iraq's police, he said. In addition, the general said the Dec. 15 election was a tremendous success. Sunni voters that had boycotted a previous election earlier in the year turned out in large numbers, along with Shiites and Kurds.

Turner said 75 percent of registered voters in his area of operations cast ballots Dec. 15. "The high voter turnout is a clear indicator that the citizens of Iraq not only have a strong desire for democracy, but they also have an increased sense of security," Turner said. He noted that security for the recent election was provided entirely by Iraqi security forces.

It's Bush's fault. Oh wait.....

Again, this is COMPLETELY against international law. Iraqis should not be allowed to vote. And the numbers of Iraqis dying should not be limited by Al Qaeda's ability to kill them.

This is yet another example of the evil that is George W. Bush, the murderer and imperialist.

Giving Iraqis the vote! Preposterous! How could the Democrats allow it?

We clearly need more anti-war demonstrations.

The war has been completely mismanaged. You're just grasping at straws with these little tidbits of news. Not only has the war been mismanaged, but the rebuilding effort is completely misguided. We have American corporations in Iraq bringing in workers from third world countries to do a lot of the construction. The Iraqis should be rebuilding their own country with our assistance, the way we helped Japan rebuild after WWII. It will be a miracle if Iraq doesn't break out into civil war within the next few years.

The war has been completely mismanaged.

My point exactly! Just look at the mess. Iraqis voting, Iraqis having tap water access, Iraqis voicing their opinions!

Doesn't anybody remember that Iraqis were not meant to be free?

Saddam slaughtered them by the tens of thousands, all according to international law.

Without this mismanaged war, we wouldn't be in this situation, and we wouldn't have all these live Iraqis running around everywhere.

Can't we do anything about this?

Yes, it is. If you want to lay the responsibility for this on anyone, you have to give it to GWB. Peace and stability coming to Iraq? Bush's fault.

You obviously do not pay a lot of attention around here, do you? Little tidbits? You better go do some serious reading of what "shadowWar" has posted prevoiusly!

You leftists have been saying that for year. I know you guys hope this will happen, but the chances are slim.

Tell me why stories like these aren't in the MSM?

Just an FYI there are 119,446 Iraqis people hired by the US alone (not to include Iraqi contracts to rebuild) to help in the rebuilding. This does not count the now 226,990 military and police that are hired.

Oh and just this week alone:

Electricity:

• The city of Kirkuk will soon benefit from a $123,000 project that will install 1500 meters of 11 kilovolt underground feeder cable to connect the Kirkuk Substation in the Almas Quarter and to the distribution network.

• About 12,400 residents in Mahalla have more reliable electricity thanks to renovations to the power distribution network.

Telecommunications:

• According to a media report on January 18, gunmen seized two engineers from the cellphone company Iraqna and killed several security guards in an ambush in Baghdad on January 18. Cellphone service continues to grow rapidly and has surpassed 5 million subscribers.

Water and Sanitation:

• Water is now flowing to more than 200 families living in small communities in Wassit Province, southeast of Baghdad. The US Army Corps of Engineers built a water pipe system to bring water to families that have never had running water in their villages, much less in their homes. The $172,000 water network project was the first step toward improving drinking water in these villages. A water treatment plant is now under construction.

• More than 12,600 people in a rural area of the Ninewa Province have a more reliable source of water with the installation of 14 wells.

Education:

• Two schools were refurbished in Hawaija, improving the learning environment for more than 590 students and 16 teachers.

• A newly refurbished school in Hit is helping about 600 students get a better education.

Public Health and Healthcare:

• Work is underway to renovate Alwaiya Children’s Hospital, which sees 300 patients daily. The $2.9 million project is upgrading and modernizing the 217- bed facility with about 70 percent of the construction complete. Three Baghdad medical schools use Alwaiya Children’s Hospital for internships.

Transportation:

• Austrian Airlines announced it will begin twice weekly air service from Vienna to Erbil starting March 9. A third weekly flight will begin on May 2.

• In Tarmiya, about 8.2 miles of roads have been repaired, helping more than 100,000 residents gain access to marketplaces and communities.

Oh and the tips to Iraqi Security force went from 442 in Feb to 4731 in Dec in 2005. There was a total of 30,273 tips from Iraqi citizens to the Iraqi and Coalition forces in 2005. Guess they really still hate us and their own troops huh.

Completly mismanaged and a quagmire. Just ask the Bahgdad residents tha just got tap water for the first time in 8 years.

Nevermind BenUser. He takes his own freedom for granted and resents any freedom for others.

He's just a blogless sniper who takes pot shots at everyone else, while writing absolutely nothing of his own.

I think liberals believe that everything that was destroyed in Iraq was destroyed by the Americans and that under Saddam, everybody had water and electricity (and, presumably, apublic healthcare).

They STILL, even after seeing the massgraves, cannot believe that Saddam was a racist bastard. Remember, it took decades for everybody to believe the same about Hitler, and there are still some who doubt that his crimes ever happened.

(End conservative mode, enter liberal mode)

Children's hospitals for Iraqis??? Unconstitutional! Against international law! MURDER!!!!!

Since BenUser has no articles of its own, who knows, it just might be the Col wanting to seem like he has an ally. ;~D
